Assessment and Background
Mary is a 5-year-old girl with moderate language and speech sound disorders associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder. She requires more support while communicating with people surrounding her due to her unintelligible speech, difficulties in understanding a variety of WH-questions and expressing herself in sentences. These difficulties have impacted her social activities to interact and communicate with her peers in school as well as to express her thoughts clearly to people surrounding her.
Intervention
To address Mary's challenges, the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) developed a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to her specific difficulties and family's goals. The therapist conducted approaches to facilitate Mary's speech and language skills at the same time. Across the therapy sessions, the SLP transitioned to focus more on her language skills when her speech became more intelligible at conversation.
The SLP worked closely with Mary's parents, providing them with weekly feedback and home practice with strategies to support Mary’s language skills (e.g., following more complex instructions, making comments in longer sentences, answering and asking appropriate conversational questions).
Positive Outcome
Mary made significant progress across the therapy sessions. She was able to maintain and expand her conversation with people surrounding her as well as having an enjoyable time with her peers at school during play and group activities.
Mary's success story demonstrates the importance of speech and language therapy and the impact that a speech therapist can have on a child's social and communication skills.
